Your data stays with you.

CatMatch is built to work without collecting personal data, unless you leave your address for the newsletter. This page details what is technically processed, what is not, and the rights you hold under the GDPR. Updated August 18, 2026.

The 30-second summary

  • Your quiz answers are stored only in your browser's localStorage, on your device.
  • No quiz answer is sent to a server: the ranking is computed in your browser. The newsletter is the only form on the site, it is optional and separate from the quiz (see the Newsletter section).
  • No cookie is set. There is no user account, so nothing to create and nothing to delete. A newsletter sign-up is the only personal data that stays with us, and it is deleted on request.
  • The host (Cloudflare) collects anonymized technical logs for security and load measurement.
  • No advertising pixel, no behavioral analytics tool (Google Analytics, Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity and the like), no third-party tracker active on the site.
  • The site contains affiliate links; they may set a cookie at the merchant's after your click, but no cookie is set by CatMatch itself.

Data controller

The data controller within the meaning of the GDPR is the site publisher, whose details appear in the legal notice. For any question about your data, write to lamypro66@gmail.com.

Quiz answers: local storage

When you answer a quiz question, your answer is saved in your browser's localStorage, under the key catmatch_quiz_answers. The content is a plain JSON object mapping each question identifier to your answer (a string, an array or a number depending on the question type).

Technical characteristics:

  • Storage is local and persistent: it survives closing the tab and restarting the browser, but stays confined to your device and to the browser you used.
  • It is never transmitted to the publisher, to the hosting server, or to a third party: the results page reads localStorage client-side (in your browser) to compute the ranking.
  • You can erase it at any time through your browser settings (usually: Preferences, Privacy, Delete site data). Nothing remains after deletion.

The quiz asks for no identifying data (surname, first name, email, address) and none of your answers ever leaves your browser. If you choose to sign up for the newsletter from the results page or from the personalised dossier page, your email address is handled separately, in its own storage, and is never matched with your quiz answers: see the Newsletter section.

Technical data: Cloudflare hosting

The site is hosted by Cloudflare Pages. On every visit, Cloudflare records some technical data needed to run and secure the service:

  • IP address (anonymized per Cloudflare standards, limited retention)
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • HTTP referrer (the page you came from)
  • Pages viewed and timestamps

This data is collected by Cloudflare as a processor (GDPR article 28) and used solely for security purposes (DDoS detection, blocking malicious bots) and anonymous statistical aggregation. It is not used to profile users, nor cross-referenced with other databases by the site publisher. See Cloudflare's privacy policy ↗.

Cookies

CatMatch sets no cookie in your browser. The site is fully functional without a session cookie, without an audience measurement cookie, and without an advertising cookie. No consent banner is required to browse CatMatch.

What the site keeps in your browser besides the quiz: three technical keys, on your device only, with no identifier and no cookie. cm:selection holds My selection, the breeds you hearted in order to compare them, three at most: you drop one by clicking its heart again, or with the remove button in the comparer. cm:gate remembers whether you filled in or closed the newsletter panel, so it is not offered again on every visit. cm:intent:... is a per-tab flag, cleared when the tab closes, that avoids counting the same results view or the same click twice. You clear them like everything else, through your browser settings.

Audience measurement: two counters a day are kept on the server, the number of results pages shown and the number of clicks on the personalised dossier button. They are two numbers, nothing else: no identifier, no profile, no tracking from one site to another, nothing that leads back to a person. To reject automated loops, the counting service separately keeps a hashed fingerprint of your IP address, never stored in clear, which expires after about one hour and is tied neither to the counters nor to a sign-up. They serve to tell whether the personalised dossier is worth building, and nothing else. That is why no consent banner is required.

Affiliate links and third-party cookies: some pages of the site (breed profiles, results page) contain affiliate links to partner merchants (Amazon Associates, Awin and its merchants: Zooplus, Maxi Zoo, Pepette, SantéVet, and others). When you click one of those links, the destination merchant may set a tracking cookie on its own domain to attribute the affiliate commission. That happens after your click, on the merchant's site, and is governed by its own privacy policy, not by CatMatch's. See the legal notice, affiliate section for the detail.

If a future update of the site introduced cookies set by CatMatch (analytics, user accounts, and so on), a consent banner compliant with the ePrivacy directive would be put in place and this page updated accordingly.

Newsletter: the email address you leave

The results page and the personalised dossier page offer a sign-up form for the CatMatch newsletter. It is optional: the consent box is unticked by default and nothing is sent until you tick it yourself. You can read your results, share them and open every breed page without ever leaving an address.

  • Purpose: to send you the CatMatch newsletter, one email a week at most, and to tell you if the personalised dossier ever ships. No other purpose, no resale, no sharing.
  • Legal basis: your consent (GDPR article 6.1.a), given by ticking the box. You can withdraw it at any time.
  • Data processed: your email address, the language of the page (French or English), the sign-up date, where it came from (results page or dossier page), and a hashed fingerprint of your browser, never stored in clear, kept only to spot automated sign-ups. Your quiz answers are never attached: they stay in your browser.
  • Anti-bot: the form contains an invisible trap field and caps the number of submissions per hour from a hashed fingerprint of your IP address, never stored in clear. That fingerprint expires after about one hour and is never tied to your sign-up.
  • Retention: until you unsubscribe, or at the latest 3 years without a single mailing from us.
  • Hosting: the list is stored in Cloudflare Workers KV, our host's storage service, acting as a processor under GDPR article 28. Workers KV stores data on Cloudflare's global network, so yours may be processed outside the European Union, under Cloudflare's data processing agreement and its standard contractual clauses. No third-party email provider is used today.
  • Your rights: access, rectification, erasure and withdrawal of consent, through a message on the contact page. Deletion is done by hand and without delay.

No email is being sent for now. The newsletter does not exist yet: this page records consent and nothing else. The first mailing will also be the first email you ever get from us, and it will carry a one-click unsubscribe link. If an email provider were introduced for that mailing, it would be named here before the first message.

Data processed outside the quiz

If you write to us through the contact page, your email address and the content of your message are received by the publisher in a personal mailbox. That data is not used for any purpose other than answering your request, is not stored in a structured database, and is never passed on to third parties.

Your GDPR rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), you hold the following rights:

  • Right of access: to obtain confirmation that data concerning you is being processed and to receive a copy of it. In practice: your quiz answers live in your browser, and you can read them yourself through the developer tools. If you signed up for the newsletter, your email address is the only identifying data the publisher holds: ask for a copy on the contact page.
  • Right to rectification: to have inaccurate data corrected. In practice: change your quiz answers directly, they update on their own. To correct your email address, write to us on the contact page.
  • Right to erasure: to have your data deleted. In practice: clearing localStorage through your browser settings removes everything held on your device, but not your newsletter sign-up, which lives on the server. Ask for its deletion on the contact page: the record is erased by hand, without delay (see the Newsletter section).
  • Right to object and right to restriction of processing: to object to a processing or ask for it to be put on hold. In practice: stopping using the site ends everything that happens in your browser. If you signed up for the newsletter, your address stays on record until you ask otherwise: withdraw your consent on the contact page, at any time and without giving a reason.
  • Right to portability: to retrieve your data in a structured format. In practice: copy the value of localStorage["catmatch_quiz_answers"] from your browser console (F12). Your email address is not in the browser: ask for a copy on the contact page.

If you believe the processing of your data does not comply with the GDPR, you can lodge a complaint with the CNIL ↗ (the French data protection authority).

Updates to this policy

This privacy policy may change if the practices of the site change (introducing analytics, adding user accounts, partnerships requiring data sharing). Any change will be signalled by updating the date at the top of this page, and significant changes will be announced on the home page for at least 30 days.
